Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) is the only living species of its genus, characterised by a bulbous knob-like protuberance on the tip of its snout. Only the mature males have this bulb, rendering Gharials as the only sexually dimorphic crocodilian in the world. Interestingly, the name 'Gharial' is derived from the name 'ghara'; Indian word for a local type of pot, which is said to resemble the shape of the structure on their snouts. An exclusively fish eating species, Gharials are found in the Ganges and its tributaries from Chambal in Rajasthan to Mahanadi in Orissa, Brahmaputra and the Barak valley of Assam.
